On December 8, 2016, Sonny Stiger presented the Tri-County FireSafe Working Group’s ‘Sonny Stiger Award’ to three recipients in recognition of exceptional work mitigating wildfire risks through hazardous fuels reduction, public education, and the distribution of wildfire risk reduction information materials in three counties.
Luke Fehlig was recognized for his professionalism as a Northwest Management forester; Mary Kelley was recognized for her creative and informative public wildfire education forums; and Jordan Alexander for his work with the Baxendale Fire District informing the public about wildfire risks, and how to reduce those risks through mitigation efforts.
The Tri-County FireSafe Working Group is active in Lewis and Clark, Jefferson, and Broadwater counties. Sonny Stiger started this group in 1984 after the North Hills fire when he recognized the need to educate the public on how to reduce risks associated with wildfires.
FireSafe Montana congratulates and thanks each award winner for their accomplishments and dedicated efforts to reduce wildfire risks; as well as thank the Tri-County FireSafe Working Group for its long-standing leadership in helping reduce wildfire risks in Lewis and Clark, Jefferson, and Broadwater counties. These award winners’ work are real-life examples of FireSafe Montana’s goal of ‘Working Together For A FireSafe Montana’.
